Primanti Bros. got its start in 1933 as a small sandwich cart catering to truck drivers and shift workers in the historic Strip District of Pittsburgh. According to Primanti Bros. lore, the fortuitous experiment of adding fried potatoes to a sandwich resulted in the now famous “Almost Famous Sandwiches”, which are topped with fresh-cut fries and coleslaw. As the story goes, the restaurant's truck-driving clientele loved that the all-in-one sandwich enabled them to hold their lunch in one hand and drive with the other.
