About Pi Day

Pi Day is an annual celebration held on March 14th (3/14) in honor of the mathematical constant pi, which is approximately equal to 3.14159. It’s recently been calculated down to 31.4 decimal places. Talk about precise! Pi is a fundamental mathematical constant that represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, and it has been studied and celebrated by mathematicians for thousands of years.

Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Since then, it has become a popular holiday among mathematicians, educators, and science enthusiasts around the world. On Pi Day, people often engage in various activities that involve math and pi, such as reciting the digits of pi, baking and eating pies (since pi sounds like pie), and participating in math-related competitions and games.

While Pi Day celebrates the importance of mathematics and science education, in recent years restaurants have picked up on the concept to entice customers with promotions, usually around pizza (pizza pies) or traditional dessert baked pies.
